Watts & Fixes is a small, independent site about keeping home appliances and heating and cooling equipment working, and about what they cost to run.

What you will find here

  • Troubleshooting guides for common problems, such as a dishwasher that will not drain or a dryer that runs without heating. Each guide starts with the most likely causes and lists what is safe to check yourself.
  • Cost guides and calculators that use the latest state-by-state electricity prices from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, so you can see what an appliance costs in your state, not just a national average.
  • Maintenance guides based on what manufacturers recommend.

The guides are grouped into five topics: dishwashers, washers and dryers, refrigerators and kitchen appliances, heat pumps and HVAC, and electricity costs.

Who runs the site

Watts & Fixes is run by jimi. I am not a licensed appliance technician, electrician, or HVAC contractor, and the guides do not pretend otherwise. They are built from manufacturer manuals and support pages, government data, and safety agencies such as the CPSC and NFPA. Every guide lists its sources so you can check them.

How the guides are made

Guides are researched and drafted with the help of AI tools, and the illustrations are made with AI image tools. Before anything is published, the facts are checked against the cited documents, the numbers are recalculated, and model and error-code details are matched to the manufacturer’s own material. You can read the full process on the Editorial Policy page.

What the guides will not do

They will not walk you through work that should be done by a professional, such as gas line or gas valve work, refrigerant handling, the inside of a microwave, or electrical panel wiring. When a problem points to that kind of repair, the guide explains why and tells you when to call a pro.
