The guides on Watts & Fixes are general information to help you understand a problem and decide what to do next. They are not a substitute for your appliance’s manual or for a licensed professional.

Before you check anything

  • Read your manual first. Your model’s owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s support pages take priority over anything on this site.
  • Turn off power. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before you open a panel, remove a cover, or touch anything inside.
  • Turn off water or gas supply to the appliance when a guide involves those connections.
  • Let hot parts cool before touching them.
  • Check for recalls at CPSC.gov/recalls or with the manufacturer.

Work we do not cover

Stop and call a licensed professional for:

  • gas lines, gas valves, or any smell of gas (leave the area and call your gas utility or 911 from outside);
  • refrigerant lines or recharging refrigerant;
  • the inside of a microwave oven, which can hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged;
  • electrical panel work, 240-volt wiring, or any wiring that feels hot, sparks, or smells like burning.

Warranty

Opening an appliance or doing your own repair may void its warranty. Check the warranty terms before you start.
