Bosch Dishwasher E24 or E25 Error: What It Means and How to Clear It

Quick answer
E24 and E25 are both drain errors. Bosch’s manual for its 300 Series SHEM63 dishwashers ties E24 to water not getting out: a kinked or clogged drain hose or drain line, or a blocked drain pump or loose pump cover. E25 points at the drain pump itself: something is blocking it, or the pump cover under the filter is not locked in. For either code, clean the filter, clear the pump area and click the pump cover back in, check the drain hose, then cancel the cycle to clear the code.
Safety first
- Cut the power at the circuit breaker (or unplug the dishwasher) before you reach into the bottom of the tub. Bosch’s manuals make this the first step of cleaning the drain pump.
- The water may be hot. Bosch warns that hot water or steam can escape if you open the door during or right after a cycle. Wait until the water noises stop and the steam is gone, and let standing water cool.
- Wear gloves. Bosch cautions that sharp debris, such as glass fragments, can be what is blocking the drain pump.
- Stop at the pump cover. Taking off the pump cover and clearing debris is in Bosch’s manuals. Removing or replacing the drain pump or its motor is not, and that is a job for a technician.
E24 vs. E25: what Bosch says each code means
Bosch words the two codes a little differently on its support pages and in its manuals, but the descriptions line up:
| Code | Bosch manual (300 Series SHEM63) | Bosch US support pages | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| E24 (shown as E:24) | Drain line clogged; drain hose kinked, clogged, or blocked; drain pump impeller clogged; pump cover loose | Not draining because the drain filter is blocked; also lists a blocked drain hose and a knockout plug left in a new garbage disposal | Filter and pump cover, then the hose, sink connection, and disposal |
| E25 (shown as E:25) | Drain pump blocked or pump cover loose | Drain pump blocked, or the pump cover is loose or missing | The pump cover and pump area under the filter |
Wording and fixes vary by model. Your own Use and Care manual is the final word. Source: Bosch 300 Series SHEM63 Operating Instructions (2020) and Bosch US error code pages, checked Oct. 23, 2026
The practical difference: E25 is about one spot, the drain pump right under the filter. E24 covers the whole drain path, from that pump out through the drain hose to the sink drain or garbage disposal. That is why E24 can send you under the sink and E25 usually does not.
Bosch’s main US error code list gives the same three checks for both codes: the drain pump and its cover, a kinked or sharply bent drain hose, and a clogged air gap or drain hose. So the to-do list is the same for both. Only the starting point changes.
Newer Bosch models may show E:61-03, E:61-02, or four lights
Recent Bosch dishwashers can report the same drain problems without the numbers 24 or 25:
- Four-digit codes. On Bosch’s current error code guide, E6103 has the same description and steps as E24, and E6102 matches E25. The 2026 Use and Care manual for the 800 Series SHX78CM5N lists drain problems as E:61-03 (water is not draining) and E:61-02 (pump cover loose or something blocking the pump).
- Four lights instead of a code. The 2026 manual for the 300 Series SHE53C85N signals these faults by lighting its four vertical lights (the cycle time lights and the Clean light) at the same time. That same pattern can also mean a water supply problem, such as a kinked inlet hose or a closed supply valve, so check whether water is actually standing in the tub.
Both newer manuals label these drain faults “not an appliance error” and list causes such as a disposal that is still plugged, a kinked drain hose, or a loose pump cover. The 800 Series manual adds a missing high loop. To find the manual for your exact model, look for the model number (E-Nr.) on the rating plate. The 800 Series manual says the plate is inside the door.
Step 1: Clean the filter
Bosch’s support pages say the most common reason a Bosch dishwasher stops draining is food debris clogging the filter or the drain pump. The filter sits at the bottom of the tub. On the 800 Series, the manual says to rotate the lower spray arm to the side first so it is out of the way.
The filter system has three parts that come out as one unit: a coarse filter on top (the SHEM63 manual calls it the Large Object Trap), a flat fine filter, and a micro filter.
- Slide out the lower rack.
- Turn the coarse filter counterclockwise and lift the whole filter system out. Bosch’s 800 Series manual says to make sure nothing falls into the sump while you do this.
- Take the parts apart. The micro filter pulls down and off. On the 800 Series, you press the locking catches together to lift out the coarse filter.
- Rinse the parts under running water. Bosch suggests soap and a soft brush. The SHEM63 manual warns against abrasive brushes or steel wool, which can damage the filter.
- If you are going on to check the pump cover, leave the filter out for now. Bosch’s not-draining guide checks the pump before the filter goes back in.
When you put it back together, the catches on the coarse filter should click into position. After you set the filter system in place and turn it clockwise, the arrow marks should line up.
Step 2: Check the drain pump cover (the E25 check)
Bosch’s E25 page says the drain pump cover sits at the bottom of the dishwasher, underneath the filter. Under the cover is the pump’s impeller (the SHEM63 manual also calls it the vanes). Here is the check as Bosch’s manuals describe it. The steps combine the 300 Series SHEM63 manual and the 800 Series SHX78CM5N manual, so follow your own manual where it differs.
- Turn off the power at the breaker.
- Take out the lower rack (the 800 Series manual says both racks) and the filter system.
- Scoop out the standing water. A sponge gets the last of it.
- Pry the pump cover up with a spoon.
- 300 Series SHEM63: pry until the cover clicks, then grip it and pull upward until you feel resistance, then pull it forward to remove it.
- 800 Series SHX78CM5N: grip the cover by its crosspiece, then lift it diagonally inward and take it out.
- With the cover off, you can reach the impeller by hand. Remove any food remnants or other objects around it. Go slowly, since the debris can be sharp.
- Put the cover back in its original position and press down until it clicks.
- Reinstall the filter system and racks, then turn the power back on.

The click matters most for E25. The SHEM63 manual says the drain pump will not work properly unless the cover is snapped in completely, and both manuals list a loose pump cover as a cause of these drain codes. A cover that sits crooked after cleaning can bring the code right back.
How to judge what you see:
- Normal: the area around the impeller is clear, and the cover goes back in flat with a click.
- Not normal: something is stuck at the impeller that you cannot remove safely, or the cover is missing or will not stay clicked in. Those are reasons to call Bosch support (see below).
Step 3: Check the drain hose and sink connection (the E24 check)
If the filter and pump area were clean and E24 is still showing, Bosch’s list points farther down the drain path. The full under-sink walk-through is in the general guide, Dishwasher Not Draining? Check These 8 Things in Order. These are the Bosch-specific points:
- Kinks. Bosch lists a kinked or sharply bent drain hose as a cause of both codes. The SHEM63 manual’s fix for a hose that is kinked, clogged, or blocked is to replace the hose.
- A new garbage disposal. Bosch’s E24 page says the installer may have forgotten to remove the knockout plug from a new disposal. Bosch’s installation instructions say to remove that plug before connecting the dishwasher drain hose to the disposal.
- The high loop. Bosch’s installation instructions for the 800 Series SHX78CM5N require a high loop or an air gap, and say part of the drain hose must be at least 33 inches off the floor or the dishwasher may not drain properly. The same instructions say not to raise the hose higher than 43 inches. The 800 Series manual lists a missing high loop, with debris washed back into the hose, as one cause of its not-draining code.
- The air gap and hose. Bosch’s error code page says to turn the dishwasher off and check the air gap. Next, disconnect the drain hose, put its end in a bucket, clear the debris, and reconnect it. Then turn the dishwasher on and run a rinse cycle to test it.
- The sink connection. Bosch’s E24 guide also says to make sure the connection where the hose meets the sink drain (Bosch calls it the siphon connection) is sealed.
Step 4: Clear the code (cancel or reset)
Bosch’s E24 guide says to reset the dishwasher after you fix the problem. Canceling the cycle also makes the dishwasher pump out the water left in the tub. The button and the exact steps depend on the model:
| Where the steps come from | What to do |
|---|---|
| Bosch US support page (general) | Press Reset 4 sec. or Start for about 4 seconds. The remaining water pumps out and the cycle cancels in about a minute. Then open the door and press On/Off. |
| 800 Series SHX78CM5N manual (2026) | Open the door, press Reset 4 sec. for about 4 seconds, and close the door. The display shows 00h:01m while the water pumps out, and the cycle ends after about 1 minute. |
| 300 Series SHEM63 manual (2020) | Press and hold Start for about 3 seconds until the display reads 0:01. Wait about 1 minute while it drains, then press On/Off. |

Watch the tub during that minute. If water is still sitting there afterward, go back to Steps 2 and 3 before you try again.
If the code still will not clear, Bosch’s error code guide describes a power reset: turn the dishwasher off with its power button or at the circuit breaker, wait about 1 minute, turn it back on, and run a short cycle with no dishes to confirm the code is gone.
When E24 or E25 means a service call
Call a pro if…
- The code comes back after you have cleaned the filter, cleared and reseated the pump cover, checked the hose, and reset the dishwasher. Bosch’s next step for both codes is its customer support line, 1-800-944-2904.
- The display shows E23 or E6101. Bosch describes these as a drain pump problem (blocked, clogged, or faulty) and says to contact support.
- The pump cover is missing or will not stay clicked in, or something is stuck at the impeller that you cannot remove safely.
- The drain pump needs to come out or be replaced. That is an electrical part and a job for a technician. In the warranty statement printed in the SHEM63 manual, Bosch recommends against repairing the product yourself and excludes damage from unauthorized service, so stay within the steps in your manual.
- Water is on the floor, or the display shows E15. Bosch says E15 means water has been detected in the base and the leak protection system is on. Turn off the water supply and contact Bosch.
- The circuit breaker trips again after you switch it back on.
One more reason to work through Steps 1 to 3 first: the same SHEM63 warranty statement excludes service visits where nothing is wrong with the product, service calls to correct the installation, and service calls to correct house plumbing. Bosch’s newer manuals describe a still-plugged disposal or a kinked drain hose as not an appliance error.
How to keep E24 and E25 from coming back
- Scrape, don’t rinse. The SHEM63 manual says the filter system is designed so you only need to scrape leftover food off dishes before loading.
- Clean the filter on a schedule. The SHEM63 manual suggests 3 to 6 times a year for light to average use and 8 to 12 times a year for heavy use, based on a household that runs the dishwasher every other day. It also says to clean it after loads with a lot of food soil or starchy foods like potatoes and pasta. The newer 800 Series manual says to check the filters for residue after each wash.
- Listen for the clicks. Each time the filter or pump cover goes back in, make sure the filter locks with its arrows lined up and the pump cover snaps all the way down.
