Quick answer

OE is LG’s “water outlet error”: the washer could not pump its water out. LG’s manuals and support pages point to a kinked, pinched, or clogged drain hose (or a hose end mounted more than 96 inches up), a clogged drain pump filter on front-loaders, and too many suds. Check the hose behind the washer first; on a front-loader, then unplug it, drain the leftover water through the small tube behind the lower front panel, and clean the filter. If the drain pump makes no sound during a Spin Only test, or OE keeps coming back, LG says the washer needs service.

Safety first

  • Unplug the washer before you move it or open the lower front panel. Turning the controls off does not disconnect the power, LG’s manuals note.
  • Keep your hands dry. Don’t touch the power cord or the controls with wet hands. If the floor near the outlet is wet, read the safety notes in the general washer drain guide first.
  • The water may be hot. Let it cool before you drain it.
  • A front-loader showing OE is still full of water. The WM4000H*A manual warns that opening the filter with water in the drum makes the water overflow. Put down towels, use a shallow pan, and drain through the small tube before you touch the filter.
  • Never run the washer with the filter out or put back crooked. The same manual says that can cause leaks.

What OE means on an LG washer

OE stands for Water Outlet Error. The O can look like a zero on the display, so it is easy to read as 0E.

LG uses the same code on front-load and top-load washers. This guide checked two owner’s manuals: the WM4000H*A front-loaders (MFL71964303, 2026 revision) and the WT7150C*, WT7000C*, and WT7010C* top-loaders (MFL68267084, 2025 revision). Both give the same two causes: a kinked, pinched, or clogged drain hose, or a hose end more than 96 inches above the bottom of the washer.

LG’s support pages add a clogged drain pump filter on front-loaders, too many suds, a frozen drain hose, and (on its newest front-load OE page) a clogged household drain. On top-loaders, OE shows up after the washer has been unable to drain for 13 minutes.

Step 1: Cancel the cycle and run Spin Only

Press Power to cancel. Both manuals say any water left inside drains after a short delay, and the controls stop responding until it’s out. A front-loader’s door stays locked while the water is too high or too hot; the WM4000H*A manual says to turn the power off and on, then select Rinse+Spin to drain it completely.

Next, run Spin Only, LG’s first test for OE. How you start it depends on the control panel:

  • WM4000H*A front-loaders and WT7150C* top-loaders: press Power, don’t choose a cycle, press and hold Spin for 3 seconds, then press Start/Pause.
  • Other front-load panels (LG’s front-load OE page): press Power, press Spin Speed until High is selected, then press Start/Pause.
  • Other top-load panels (LG’s top-load OE page): press Special Use until Spin Only lights, then press Start/Pause.

No Spin Only on your top-loader? Start a cycle, let it run a few minutes, then pause it. LG’s top-load OE page says the washer times out after 8 minutes, shows dr, and tries to drain. (In the WT7150C* manual, a pause of more than 4 minutes does the same.) dr is not an error code. It means the drain feature is working.

Listen during the first 15 seconds. In LG’s front-load test, a hum, and maybe the sound of draining water, means the drain pump motor is running.

  • Hum, and the water drains: keep going. Steps 2 to 4 find what caused the OE.
  • Hum, but the water stays: the pump runs but something is in the way. Check the hose (Step 2) and the front-load filter (Step 3).
  • No hum at all: the drain pump is not working and the washer needs repair, LG says.

Step 2: Check the drain hose and how high it goes

Pull the washer away from the wall to see the hose. Look for a bent or clogged hose, or one pinched between the washer and the wall (LG’s top-load OE page). Straighten kinks, clear clogs, and run a spin cycle to see if OE clears. To keep it from happening again, leave at least 4 inches between the back of the washer and the wall and at least 1 inch on each side.

Then check where the hose ends. LG’s manuals measure these limits from the bottom of the washer.

The drain hose should hook into the standpipe with room for air around it. LG's height limits for your model are in the table below.
LG drain hose limits
Requirement Front-load (WM4000H*A manual) Top-load (WT7150C* manual, spec sheet, LG help page)
Hose end height 24 to 96 inches above the bottom of the washer 29.5 to 96 inches above the bottom of the washer
For best draining No higher than 66 inches No higher than 66 inches
Elbow bracket Within 4 inches of the hose end Within 4 inches of the hose end (LG help page)
Depth in the standpipe Not stated No more than 8 inches
Distance from the washer Not stated No more than 60 inches away (spec sheet)
Seal at the drain Never airtight, no tape Never airtight, no tape
Hose too short Use LG’s front-load extension drain hose Not stated

Your model's installation section may differ. The WT7150CW spec sheet gives 29 inches as the minimum; the WT7150C* manual gives 29.5. Source: LG WM4000H*A and WT7150C* owner's manuals, WT7150CW spec sheet (2021), and LG's top-load drain hose help page, checked Oct. 23, 2026

What the numbers mean for OE:

  • Above 96 inches: a listed cause of OE in both manuals. Lower the hose end.
  • Between 66 and 96 inches: allowed, but drain performance is increasingly affected.
  • Taped or sealed in: always leave an air gap. Without one, LG says water can siphon out of the tub and hurt washing and rinsing.
  • Too low on the WT7150C*: that manual lists a hose end below 29.5 inches under IE (the inlet error), not OE.

Is it the house drain? Take the hose out of the drain pipe, aim it into a laundry tub, and run a spin cycle. If water pumps out normally, LG’s drain page says the drain pipe is probably clogged, not the washer. The general washer drain guide covers standpipe checks in more detail.

Step 3 (front-load only): Drain the tube and clean the pump filter

The drain pump filter catches lost buttons, loose change, and lint. LG puts one only on its front-loaders and washer-dryer combos, so top-load owners can skip to Step 4. On front-loaders, it sits behind a service panel in the bottom-left corner, with a small drain tube on the left and the filter cap on the right.

Close-up illustration of a gloved hand draining water from the small drain tube behind a front-load washer's lower access cover into a shallow pan, with the round filter cap nearby
Drain the water through the small tube first, then remove the round pump filter.

These steps combine the WM4000H*A manual with LG’s front-load OE page:

  1. Turn the washer off and unplug it.
  2. Lay down towels and set a shallow pan in front of the filter cover. Open the cover by pulling its tab down and out.
  3. Drain the tube first. Unclip the small tube, pull out its cap, and let the water run into the pan. A shallow pan fills fast, so recap the tube and empty the pan as often as you need. Don’t pull the tube out far, which kinks it. If nothing comes out, push it back in about 1 inch.
  4. Remove the filter. When the tube stops running, recap it and clip it back. Put a towel under the filter and twist it counterclockwise. A little more water will run out.
  5. Clean it with a soft-bristle brush and warm water, not in the dishwasher. Brush out the filter opening and its base too.
  6. Put it back. Twist the filter clockwise until it stops and sits securely, then close the cover.

Then:

  • Debris in the filter: run a Tub Clean cycle, then start a new cycle to see if OE is gone.
  • Filter was already clean: suds are the next suspect (Step 4).

LG recommends cleaning this filter monthly. Its newest OE page warns that coins, hairpins, and lint left in the filter can slow draining, cause odors in laundry, keep the washer from spinning properly, or damage the drain pump motor.

Step 4: Rule out suds and run Tub Clean

Too many suds create air pockets. When the pump starts pulling air instead of water, it signals a drain problem, so OE can appear even with a clean filter and a straight hose. LG’s fix is a Tub Clean cycle and less detergent from then on.

The WM4000H*A is designed for HE (high-efficiency) detergent only, and it has a separate oversudsing code, Sud. To clear the suds, its manual says to turn the washer off and back on, then run Rinse+Spin.

On top-loaders, LG says to run Tub Clean after a successful Spin Only to wash away buildup that formed during the OE.

Washer in a cold garage or basement? A frozen hose can cause OE

Both manuals say not to install or store the washer where it can drop below freezing. If it freezes anyway:

  1. Pour warm water, 122 to 140°F (LG’s drain page), into the drum and close the door or lid.
  2. Wait 1 to 2 hours for the drain pump to thaw.
  3. Run Spin Only and check that the water drains (both manuals). On a front-loader, LG’s drain page also has you empty the leftover water through the small drain tube.

The WM4000H*A shows its own code, FF, when an inlet hose, the drain hose, or the drain pump is frozen. For a washer stored unused where it can freeze, both manuals describe a routine with 1 gallon of nontoxic RV antifreeze, never automotive antifreeze.

When OE means service

Call a pro if…

  • No hum during the Spin Only test. LG says the drain pump is not working and the washer needs repair.
  • OE comes back on a front-loader after you cleaned the filter, ran Tub Clean, and cut back on detergent. LG says the washer may need repair.
  • OE comes back on a top-loader after you forced a drain and ran an empty wash cycle. LG says it then needs repair.
  • It still won’t drain after you thawed it. LG says to request a service visit.
  • The washer pumps out fine into a laundry tub, but the drain pipe backs up. That’s a plumbing job.
  • The filter is cracked or won’t screw in securely. Don’t run the washer without it; LG’s manual warns of leaks.
  • Anything inside the cabinet. LG’s manuals leave repairs not described in the owner’s manual to qualified service personnel. A drain pump is an electrical part, and this site does not cover replacing it.
  • The washer is under warranty. Contact LG before you open anything beyond the filter panel.

LG’s help pages link to its 24/7 chat support and an online repair request.

How to keep OE from coming back

Empty pockets and clean the front-load filter monthly. Use HE detergent and don’t overdo it. Keep at least 4 inches behind the washer and 1 inch on each side, with the hose end ideally no higher than 66 inches above the bottom of the washer. And keep the washer above freezing.
